ASA National Masters championships (25m) Sheffield

26-28th October 2007

This years ASA national short course masters competition took place at ponds forge international swimming centre Sheffield. Brighton swimming club had three of its squad / masters swimmers competing (Paul Allen, Jon Pook and Stephen Murphy).

The weekends swimming started on Friday evening with all 3 swimmers competing in the 200m freestyle. First off was Paul who had an excellent swim smashing his personal best time by almost 6 seconds to record a time of 2.07.88 which gained him a fourth place finish and a masters club record in his age group, just missing out on a silver by a tenth of a second. Next to swim was Jon who is a sprint specialist so the 200m was an event up for him. Jon touched home in a 2.01.39 which was personal best and good indicator that he would be on form for his shorter events. Next to swim was Steve who recorded a personal best time of 1.58.51 and a club record and club masters record. Jon also rounded the evening off with a personal best in the 50 fly (27.07). A great start to the meet which left the team full of confidence for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday morning saw Steve and Jon contest the 100m fly. First up was Steve who had been close to breaking the minute on two previous occasions during the summer but narrowly missed out by hundredths on both attempts. Steve touched home in a 59.61 personal best and in doing so broke the club record and master’s record for the event. Jon then continued his good form by swimming a personal best of 1.00.40 to round off a successful morning of swimming.

Saturday afternoon saw Paul and Jon compete in the 100 freestyle and Steve contest the 400 IM. Steve swam in the final heat of the IM and cheered on by his team-mates (Jon and Paul) swam a 4 second personal to record a time of 4.42.97 which is a club master’s record. Paul then took a second off his personal best in the free to record a time of 57.30, Jon set a club record and master’s record by recording a season’s best time of 53.78. Paul also competed in the 50 backstroke where he set a personal best time of 30.75 and claimed a bronze medal and master’s club record. A great day of swimming with pb’s and records for each swimmer.

Sunday morning saw Steve compete in the 50 breastroke in which he recorded a seasons best of 31.17. Paul swam in the 100 backstroke and recorded another personal best of 1.05.68 which was also a club master’s record, again some excellent results. Sunday afternoon saw Paul and Jon compete in the 50 freestyle. Paul swam 26.12 to record another great personal best and club master’s record and Jon swam 24.67 which was also a personal best, club record and master’s club record.

Congratulations to all three swimmers, who once again outperformed themselves to achieve a great set of results and to start the season off on a big high. City of Brighton SwimmersCompeting as the City of Brighton and Hove we managed to record 9 first places, 3 second places and 2 third places. Congratulations to everyone that swam, an excellent performance with a relatively small team of swimmers. All Brighton swimmers medalled, which indicates a great overall team performance, a particular mention must go to the men’s 4 x 50m medley relay which just touched out Otter sc for gold, well done Paul Allen, Jack Smith, Adam Harper and Steve Murphy. Well done also to Nicole Read, our only lady swimming. She swam for a well earned bronze medal in the 50m butterfly.
